SYDNEY: Australia's unemployment rate fell 0.1 points to a 33-year low of 4.2 per cent in September, official data released Thursday showed.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said 460,000 people were recorded as unemployed in September on a seasonally adjusted basis, down from 472,000 in August and slightly better than market expectations.

A total of 13,000 new jobs were created over the month, with full-time employment down 17,200 and part-time work up 30,100.

The tight labour market will fuel speculation of a further interest rate rise by the Reserve Bank of Australia before the year's end.

In August, the central bank raised rates by 25 basis points to 6.50 per cent, bringing them to their highest level in more than a decade.
