Australian banks agree mega merger

Australia's fourth-largest bank Westpac and fifth-ranked St George on Tuesday said they had agreed to a proposed merger which would create the country's biggest bank.

SYDNEY: Australia's fourth-largest bank Westpac and fifth-ranked St George on Tuesday said they had agreed to a proposed merger which would create the country's biggest bank.

The announcement was made in a joint statement to the stock exchange, just one day after Westpac flagged its bid to form Australia's leading financial services company with a market capitalisation of more than 60 billion US dollars.
