Different battery chemical formulations require distinct recycling processes. Recycling facilities often use high-temperature metal reclamation or mechanical sorting. For standard single-use alkaline or zinc-carbon batteries, made of steel, zinc, manganese, potassium, graphite, paper, and plastic, materials are shredded to separate the paper, plastics, and metals so they can be reused to make new batteries or products.

Historically, single-use batteries contained mercury before being phased out by the federal Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act of 1996; today’s single-use alkaline and lithium batteries are recyclable in theory, while rechargeable batteries are rarely allowed in household trash bins due to hazardous heavy metals.
To recycle batteries safely, consumers must prepare them properly before drop-off or shipment. TreeHugger recommends placing clear, non-conductive tape over the battery ends and storing them in a plastic bag or cardboard container to prevent sparks. Consumers can find local collection programs through county websites, hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s, the Earth911 recycling locator, non-profits like Call2Recycle, or commercial mail-in services like Battery Solutions and Big Green Box.
