Ted Egan - the beloved Australian folk musician, author and former public servant - has died at the age of 93 in Alice Springs. Born in Melbourne in 1932, Egan relocated to the Northern Territory at 16, where he became a passionate chronicler of Indigenous culture, outback life and Australian history. Over his long career he released numerous albums, wrote books, and gained fame for songs like Gurindji Blues - a protest anthem supporting Indigenous land rights. He is survived by his wife, Nerys Evans, whom he first met under a dart board in a Perth pub during a folk festival, ABC News reported.

"It is with sadness, but also great pride that Nerys Evans and the Egan family marks the passing of our beloved partner, Dad, grandfather, great grandfather and best mate Ted Egan," His family said in a statement as quoted by news.com.au.

“Ted passed peacefully at home this morning as was his wish. We shared Ted with Territorians, Australians and the wider world.

“He lived a big and very generous life, spanning 93 years."

Beyond music, Egan served as the 18th Administrator of the Northern Territory from 2003–2007. He was widely regarded as a storyteller and 'bush balladeer', whose songs and writing preserved a fading Australia - earning him a place as a national icon and champion of cultural heritage.

WHO IS TED EGAN?

Egan will be remembered as one of Australia’s most accomplished and versatile cultural figures - a musician, author, footballer, TV presenter, academic and historian. According to news.com.au, over his long career, he released 30 folk albums beginning in 1969, published 15 books, produced a six-part TV series on Australia, and co-hosted The Great Outdoors.

In 1942, he helped found the St Mary’s Football Club with Reverend Father Aubrey Collins to give Tiwi Islanders serving in the armed forces a chance to play in Darwin. At the time, only one NTFL club allowed full-blood Aboriginal players. St Mary’s quickly rose to prominence, winning its first two premierships within just two years.

Egan earned numerous honours, including Member of the Order of Australia (1993) and later Officer of the Order (2004). He was named a National Trust Living Treasure, inducted into the Australian Roll of Renown in 1995, and received multiple lifetime achievement and country music awards.
