Australia appoints Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as first woman to lead its army
In a historic first, Australia’s army is set to appoint its first female commander, Susan Coyle. The milestone comes 125 years after the force was established, marking a significant moment in the nation’s military history. The decision was announced by Defence Minister Richard Marles on Monday as he unveiled the "deeply historic" appointment.

Coyle was named Australia's Chief of Army following a three-decade career during which she served in the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan and the Middle East. Her term will begin in July 2026. Speaking about Coyle’s appointment, Marles said, "Her achievement means that she will be the first woman to command a service in Australian history," as quoted by news agency AFP. "And it is a deeply historic moment. As Susan said to me, you cannot be what you cannot see," he added.

Australia's army is in the throes of a major transformation, equipping itself with long-range firepower, drones and other modern combat tools. Coyle stressed her experience in areas such as cyber warfare. "This breadth of experience provides a strong foundation for the responsibilities of command and the trust placed in me," she said.
