A video recorded from the audience showed 2HD presenter Darcey walking onto the stage to accept the Best Newcomer award for her program, 'The Nightline'. Moments later, Ashford appeared to hurry onto the stage and embrace Darcey in celebration. He then spun her around in front of the audience during the award presentation. As the interaction unfolded, footage appeared to show Ashford placing his left hand on Darcey’s backside, prompting visible surprise and criticism from viewers after the video circulated online.
According to Mediaweek, Ashford, the head of Newcastle-based radio station 2HD, has been suspended following an incident that occurred during the 2026 Australian Audio Awards at Carriageworks on Thursday night.
The Super Radio Network (SRN), which owns 2HD, later confirmed the suspension. SRN Managing Director Graham Mott also told the outlet that Ashford had been 'suspended from work' while the matter is being addressed.
Mott also said that he had personally apologised to Cheralyn and her husband, who was present at the Australian Audio Awards when the incident occurred.
