Wallabies recall veteran James O'Connor for Lions rugby series after Lolesio Blow

Australia coach Joe Schmidt has recalled veteran flyhalf James O'Connor to the Wallabies squad for the upcoming three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions, following Noah Lolesio’s withdrawal due to a neck injury that required surgery.

The 35-year-old O'Connor, who last played for the Wallabies in 2022, gets a rare second chance to face the Lions, having started at flyhalf in all three Tests during the 2013 series, which Australia lost 1-2.



O’Connor has recently revived his career with a strong showing for the Crusaders in their Super Rugby Pacific title-winning campaign, although he did not start a match and is expected to be a bench option behind young playmakers Ben Donaldson and Tom Lynagh.

Schmidt noted that O'Connor’s experience would be valuable in guiding the team’s less experienced players.

"His experience was something that helped Tom Lynagh last year with the Reds," Schmidt added. "That experience can potentially help ... our young 10s as they continue to progress as well."


In other selections, Will Skelton and Rob Valetini return from calf injuries, while Dave Porecki is included despite a recent concussion. Jake Gordon, who missed the win over Fiji with a hamstring issue, is retained alongside Nic White and Tate McDermott.

Harry Wilson, who has captained the side recently, may not retain that role due to ongoing injury concerns. Schmidt emphasized the need for a fit and available captain before making a decision.


Uncapped players Corey Toole and Nick Champion de Crespigny join the 36-man squad after impressive performances against the Lions for ACT Brumbies and Western Force, respectively. Josh Canham also joins the squad after standing out for the Queensland Reds. The series begins July 19 in Brisbane.
