The back-to-back dismissals have raised questions about his current form and technique, especially after hanging boots in T20Is and Tests. With ODI cricket now their only international format, it remains to be seen whether the duo features in India's long-term plans, with the next 50-over World Cup still two years away.
Trailing 0-1 in the three-match series, India lost newly-appointed skipper Shubman Gill (9) early at the score of 17 on the first ball of the seventh over, after being put into bat. Kohli, who was not looking comfortable, lasted just four balls before being dismissed lbw by Aussie speedster Xavier Bartlett three balls later.
Kohli had an extended discussion with Rohit Sharma but decided not to use ball-tracking for a review, effectively conceding that the delivery would have struck the top of middle and leg stump. This dismissal came on the heels of another scoreless outing in Perth, where he was caught at point by Cooper Connolly off Mitchell Starc for an eight-ball duck.
The 36-year-old gave a brief wave to the crowd as he walked off, in what is expected to be his penultimate innings on his Australian farewell tour. Despite this setback, Kohli remains one of the most prolific run-scorers in ODI history, and fans will be hoping for a swift return to form in the third and final ODI to restore his reputation as one of cricket’s premier batsmen.
