After scoring just 17 in the first innings, the SCG crowd dared to dream when Khawaja opened his account with a flick for four off Will Jacks. The fairytale ended soon after when he chopped on to Josh Tongue. His final walk off a Test field was met with a thundering applause, as Khawaja waved to the crowd. From the stands, a tearful Rachel watched as he knelt, kissed the turf, and made his farewell exit.
“A little bit of annoyance because I chopped on,” Khawaja told Channel 7 after the match.
“You don’t always get the fairy tale where I score the runs in the end. And I kind of like that in some respect. When it happened, I got over that after a few seconds.
“I looked over and saw Rachel. You know, my family was up there, gave them kisses and the love because without her I wouldn’t be here right now.
“And obviously coming out at the end here and just one final just frustration just to say thank you."

The left-hander ends his Test career with 6,229 runs at an average of 43.25, ranking 14th among Australia’s all-time run-scorers. Finishing at the SCG was fitting for the 39-year-old, with the ground central to many highs in a career marked by ups and downs, and close to where he grew up. Khawaja made his Test debut there during the 2010-11 Ashes, scoring 37 and 21 and displaying the calm, measured batting style that defined his career.
Khawaja’s career came full circle at the SCG, the venue where he made his Test debut against England in 2011. Born in Islamabad, he migrated to Australia as a child and went on to become the nation’s first Pakistan-born and first Muslim Test cricketer. Across his 88-Test career, Khawaja scored 16 centuries at an average above 43, while also representing Australia in 40 ODIs and nine T20 matches, inspiring a new generation of players.
