An 18-year-old man died after being hit by a ute in Padstow, Sydney, with police alleging the driver ran a red light.

An 18-year-old man has died after being struck by a ute in an alleged red-light violation in Padstow, in south-west Sydney. The incident occurred around 10:40 pm AEST on Saturday night, July 12, when emergency services were called to Davies Road following reports of a pedestrian being hit.

According to police, the driver of the ute allegedly failed to stop at a red traffic light before hitting the young man. Passing motorists stopped to administer CPR before paramedics arrived, but the teenager died at the scene.

In a separate and unrelated incident earlier the same day, a 29-year-old man was fatally shot by police at Westfield Mount Druitt.

NSW Police said the man had arrived at the shopping centre after his wife was allegedly involved in a physical altercation between two groups of women.

According to Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood, the man retrieved a large machete from his vehicle and refused police instructions to drop the weapon.

As he moved toward the women involved, an officer fired multiple shots. The man died at the scene despite emergency medical efforts.

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad is investigating the shooting. Assistant Commissioner Wood said preliminary reviews of security footage and body-worn cameras indicate the officers acted appropriately, calling their intervention “brave”.
