Sydney records warmest night in seven months with 28 degrees Celsius at midnight on Thursday

Sydney recorded its warmest night in seven months on Thursday morning, October 9, with temperatures reaching 27.7 degrees Celsius at midnight, according to Weatherzone. The overnight warmth resulted from a combination of high cloud cover and warm inland winds affecting the Sydney central business district.

After temperatures cooled to the low 20s late Wednesday night, a west-northwesterly wind change caused warm inland air to drift over Sydney's CBD from approximately 11 p.m. By midnight, winds gusted above 50 kilometers per hour as temperatures climbed.

High cloud drifting over eastern New South Wales exacerbated the overnight warmth by trapping heat near the surface and preventing it from radiating into space. This meteorological phenomenon contributed to sustained warm temperatures throughout the night.

Sydney's lowest temperature occurred at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, shortly after sunrise, when the mercury dropped to 22.2 degrees Celsius. This minimum temperature measured approximately 8.5 degrees above average for this time of year and equaled Sydney's average maximum temperature in October.

Sydney's last comparable warm night occurred in March 2025

Sydney has not experienced a night this warm since March 16, 2025, when the city recorded a low of 24.5 degrees Celsius, almost seven months prior to Thursday's reading.

Bursts of warmth are not unusual for Sydney and other areas of Australia's east coast during October. While oceans to the east remain relatively cool in October, rising temperatures over Australia's interior create a heat source that can be pushed toward the coast under certain weather patterns.

Western New South Wales records high maximum temperatures this week

Hot air has been present in western New South Wales throughout the week. Maximum temperatures at Brewon, located southwest of Walgett, reached 37.8 degrees Celsius on Monday and 37.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Sydney temperature forecast remains above average through weekend

Sydney is forecast to remain several degrees warmer than average for the remainder of the week, with maximum temperatures in the high 20s Celsius and minimum temperatures in the high teens Celsius. Cooler temperatures will return from Monday under the influence of a southerly wind change.

The warm overnight conditions on Thursday marked a significant deviation from typical October weather patterns in Sydney, driven by inland heat sources and atmospheric conditions that trapped warmth near the surface.
