Shot after a Cry for Help: Man in Critical Condition after Police Open Fire during Sydney Caravan Park Siege; Questions Grow over Use of Force in Mental Health Crises
A 52-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot by police during a three-hour siege at a caravan park in Sydney’s south-west. Police were called to Poplar Tourist Park in Elderslie around 12:15 pm on Thursday(June 19) following concerns for the man’s welfare. When officers arrived, they located the man inside a cabin. According to police, the man armed himself with a knife and began making threats to harm himself.

Police negotiators were brought in and spent several hours trying to de-escalate the situation. Residents in nearby cabins were advised to stay indoors as tactical officers surrounded the area.

Just before 3:30 pm, police say they entered the cabin after negotiations failed and the man allegedly rushed at officers with the knife. Officers first used a taser and less-lethal rounds, but when those were ineffective, police fired live ammunition.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Liverpool Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

A critical incident has been declared, which means an investigation into the police response is underway. The NSW Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead the investigation, which will be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).

Police have not released the man’s name or further details about his condition.
