Sydney police fired at a suicidal man after a three-hour standoff in a caravan park, here’s why
A 52-year-old man is critically injured after police shot him at Poplar Tourist Park in Elderslie. The incident followed a three-hour siege. Police responded to welfare concerns and found the man armed with a knife. Negotiators tried to de-escalat...

Police negotiators were brought in and spent several hours trying to de-escalate the situation. Residents in nearby cabins were advised to stay indoors as tactical officers surrounded the area.
Just before 3:30 pm, police say they entered the cabin after negotiations failed and the man allegedly rushed at officers with the knife. Officers first used a taser and less-lethal rounds, but when those were ineffective, police fired live ammunition.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Liverpool Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
A critical incident has been declared, which means an investigation into the police response is underway. The NSW Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will lead the investigation, which will be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
Police have not released the man’s name or further details about his condition.
