Severe weather warning: Intense rain and dangerous flash flooding threaten Queensland and NT
Millions of Australians are facing severe weather with intense rainfall and dangerous flash flooding expected across Queensland and parts of the Northern Territory. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued multiple warnings as a tropical low strengthe...

The BOM’s latest severe weather warnings forecast heavy to locally intense rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, particularly overnight when rainfall intensity is expected to peak.
Forecast rainfall totals for affected regions indicate 24-hour accumulations between 100 mm and 150 mm, with localised amounts possibly exceeding 220 mm in some areas. These conditions present a serious risk not only to infrastructure and roads but also to cattle, livestock and isolated outback communities.
Communities from Mount Isa and Cloncurry to Boulia, Urandangi and Dajarra remain on high alert as the weather system moves southward and continues to pull moisture from northern tropical regions.
The BOM emphasises that flash flooding events can occur rapidly and without much warning, urging residents to take safety precautions, remain indoors during heavy storms and avoid driving through floodwaters.
In addition, separate severe rain warnings also cover large parts of the Barkly, Simpson and Tanami districts in the Northern Territory, where similar intense rainfall patterns are forecast to cause dangerous flash flooding. In these regions, residents are advised to secure loose objects, prepare emergency kits and exercise extreme caution if travel becomes necessary.
Heavy rain has already drenched parts of northern and western Queensland in recent days, with more than 100 mm recorded in several locations over the previous week. Rivers in catchment areas around Mount Isa and Cloncurry have swollen, prompting concerns that continued rainfall could lead to significant rises in river levels and further flooding downstream.
Safety and preparedness
The BOM, state authorities and emergency services are emphasising preparedness:- Avoid floodwaters: Never drive, walk, swim or play in areas with moving water.
- Stay informed: Monitor local alerts from BOM and emergency services regularly.
- Prepare property: Use sandbags and move belongings out of flood-prone areas where possible.
- Health precautions: Keep asthma medications and necessary health supplies accessible.
