Seventy years ago, Spanish anglers welcomed an American predator into their waters for sport; today, the largemouth bass is spreading through ecosystems and threatening native wildlife

The story is not simply about a fish moving from one river to another. It is about how an introduction made for recreation can permanently alter food webs, and how difficult it becomes to reverse an ecological decision once a species establishes itself.
From prized sport fish to invasive predator
The largemouth bass is native to the eastern and southern United States and northern Mexico. According to Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), it was introduced into Spain in 1955 specifically for sport fishing. Its subsequent expansion was aided by illegal translocations and by the connectivity of reservoirs and rivers once the species became established in a basin.
A scientific study examining the species' invasion of the Iberian Peninsula likewise identifies 1955 as the date of its first introduction into Spain for sport fishing. The researchers noted that largemouth bass had become established in roughly half of the reservoirs across the Iberian Peninsula.
Today, MITECO lists Micropterus salmoides in Spain's Catalogue of Invasive Alien Species.
The species is also an adaptable predator. Spanish government material says it feeds on invertebrates, amphibians and fish, with larger individuals capable of taking vertebrates associated with the riverbank, including small mammals and reptiles.
The pressure starts at the bottom of the food chain
MITECO identifies heavy predation on native fish, particularly cyprinids, as one of the principal impacts of the black bass. Its assessment notes a relationship between the decline of these native fish communities and the presence of the invasive predator. The ministry also records competition with native fish for habitat and food.
Research beyond Spain paints a similar picture. The US Geological Survey's Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database reports that introduced largemouth bass can reduce populations of small native fish through predation, in some cases contributing to local declines or extinctions.
In Spain's Ruidera Lakes, MITECO records studies showing that largemouth bass consume crustaceans, insects and fish, including the freshwater blenny (Salaria fluviatilis), a threatened Iberian species.

The problem is no longer just introduction
Spain's challenge has shifted from preventing the original introduction to stopping further movement.
MITECO says illegal introductions for recreational fishing can maintain abundant populations even where natural recruitment is relatively low. The ministry recommends preventing intentional releases and transfers between watersheds.
That makes the largemouth bass a particularly revealing case in the wider invasive-species problem: a fish introduced to make fishing more attractive became a predator that authorities now have to manage to protect the biodiversity of the waters it occupies.
