Who was Richard Feynman?
Richard Phillips Feynman was born on May 11, 1918, in New York City. He became one of the most influential American physicists of the 20th century, known not only for his work in theoretical physics but also for his unconventional personality, playful curiosity and ability to explain complicated scientific ideas in remarkably accessible ways.
Feynman studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before completing his PhD at Princeton University. During the Second World War, he joined the Manhattan Project, the US programme that developed the first atomic bombs. He worked at Los Alamos, New Mexico, alongside some of the leading physicists of the period.
In 1965, Feynman shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga for their fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics.
But his reputation extended well beyond academic physics. Feynman's lectures, books and public appearances made him one of the most recognisable science communicators of his generation. His books Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! and What Do You Care What Other People Think? introduced readers to his humour, curiosity and distinctive approach to life.
He died of cancer on February 15, 1988, aged 69.

What does the quote mean?
The central idea is simple: understanding something does not necessarily diminish our ability to appreciate it. It can deepen it. A person can look at a flower and appreciate its colour, symmetry and scent without knowing anything about biology. But scientific knowledge can reveal another layer of complexity.
The flower is not merely an attractive object. Its colours may have evolved for particular ecological purposes.
