Who was Marie Antoinette?

Marie Antoinette was born Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna in Vienna on November 2, 1755, the youngest daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Holy Roman Emperor Francis I. She grew up in the Habsburg court before becoming part of a diplomatic marriage intended to strengthen relations between Austria and France.

At just 14 years old, she married Louis-Auguste, the future Louis XVI, in 1770. Four years later, when Louis XVI became king, Marie Antoinette became Queen of France.

Her position was extraordinarily visible, but it was also precarious. She was a foreign-born queen at a time when France had deep political tensions, and her Austrian background made her an easy target for critics.

Her lavish lifestyle, friendships at court and involvement in political affairs were repeatedly attacked in pamphlets and rumours. She was eventually branded with the hostile nickname “Madame Déficit”, as critics blamed her for part of France's financial problems.

Some of the stories associated with her, however, were false or heavily distorted. The famous phrase “Let them eat cake”, for instance, has long been attributed to her, but historians have found no reliable evidence that she actually said it.

Marie Antoinette eventually had four children: Marie-Thérèse, born in 1778; Louis Joseph, born in 1781; Louis Charles, born in 1785; and Sophie, born in 1786, who died as an infant in 1787.

Her relationship with her children became increasingly important to her as political life around the royal family became more dangerous.

The family's world began collapsing with the French Revolution in 1789. The monarchy was increasingly challenged, the royal family was forced to leave Versailles for Paris and, after the failed attempt to escape France in 1791, their position became even more vulnerable.

Marie Antoinette's eldest son, Louis Joseph, died in June 1789 at just seven years old. Historical accounts describe his death as a profound blow to his mother.
