Fashion has always been about more than clothes. A colour, a silhouette or a particular accessory can change how a person feels when they look in the mirror. But while trends constantly change, the most enduring idea in fashion may be much simpler.

That idea captured in today’s quote is widely attributed to Coco Chanel. Whether choosing a dress, a lipstick shade or an everyday outfit, the line turns fashion away from rigid rules and toward individuality, confidence and personal taste.

Who was Coco Chanel?

Coco Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. Her early life was marked by hardship. Her mother died when Chanel was 12, after which she and her sisters were sent to live at the Aubazine Abbey. It was there that she learned to sew, a skill that would eventually become the foundation of her career.

As a young woman, Chanel briefly worked as a singer and performer in cafés, where she acquired the nickname “Coco.” She later began making hats, initially as a milliner, and opened her first shops in the early 20th century.

Her approach to fashion quickly distinguished her from the elaborate styles popular at the time. Chanel favored simplicity, comfort and practical elegance. She helped popularize jersey fabric in women's clothing, introduced relaxed silhouettes and challenged the idea that women's fashion had to be restrictive or heavily ornamented.

Her influence expanded dramatically after she introduced her fragrance, Chanel No. 5, in 1921. The perfume became one of the most recognizable fragrances in the world.

Chanel's fashion empire grew around an aesthetic built on understated luxury. The little black dress, the Chanel suit, costume jewelry, quilted handbags and two-tone shoes became closely associated with the house's identity.

Her career was not without controversy. Chanel's relationships and activities during the German occupation of France during World War II have been extensively scrutinized by historians, including allegations concerning her association with German intelligence and her conduct during the occupation. Her wartime history remains a complicated part of her biography.

After closing her fashion house during World War II, Chanel returned to fashion in 1954 at the age of 71. Her comeback collection eventually restored her influence, particularly among international clients. She continued working until her death in Paris on January 10, 1971.

Quote of the day

“The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.”

What does the quote mean?

At its simplest, the quote suggests that there is no single colour or fashion rule that works equally well for everyone. A shade that looks striking on one person may not have the same effect on another. The difference can come down to complexion, hair colour, personal preferences, the occasion or simply how confident someone feels wearing it.

But the deeper message goes beyond colour. Chanel's words encourage people to understand what works for them rather than blindly following trends. Fashion changes constantly. What is considered fashionable one season may disappear the next. Personal style, however, can be much more lasting.

The quote can therefore be read as a lesson in confidence. Looking good is not necessarily about wearing what everyone else considers fashionable. It is about finding something that complements your appearance and, equally importantly, makes you feel comfortable in your own identity.
