Who was Anne Frank?

Anne Frank was born Annelies Marie Frank on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Otto and Edith Frank. Her family was Jewish, and after the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, rising antisemitism increasingly threatened Jewish families like theirs.

The Franks moved to Amsterdam, where Anne spent much of her childhood. But the German occupation of the Netherlands in 1940 brought new restrictions and persecution against the country's Jewish population.

In July 1942, after Anne's older sister Margot received a call-up notice, the family went into hiding. They eventually occupied a concealed set of rooms behind Otto Frank's business premises, a place Anne famously called the “Secret Annex.”

Anne received a diary for her 13th birthday in June 1942. During the two years she spent in hiding, she wrote extensively about her experiences, relationships, fears and ambitions. She also dreamed of becoming a writer.

Her diary ended abruptly after the people hiding in the Secret Annex were arrested on August 4, 1944. Anne and her sister were eventually deported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where both died in early 1945. Anne was 15.

Her father, Otto Frank, was the only member of the Secret Annex known to have survived the Holocaust. After the war, he worked to have Anne's writings published. The Diary of a Young Girl became an international literary landmark and introduced millions of readers to Anne's voice.
