The deceased three-year-old, identified as Caden Case, was in the car with his 24-year-old father, Samuel Ian Paterson, his 22-year-old mother, and another child when the crash occurred. The vehicle collided into bushland near Stapylton at about 5 AM on Saturday (October 25, 2025).
Following the crash, Caden sustained critical injuries. He and his mother were taken to Beenleigh Police Station by a passerby, 9News reported. However, despite the efforts of officers, he couldn't be saved. Paterson, the father, and the other child were later found at an address in Beenleigh. He has been in custody since the crash. The child was taken to hospital for assessment and cleared.
'Mother was driving,' says probe
Caden's mother was believed to be behind the wheel when the car crashed, police revealed on Friday (February 27, 2026) following months of forensic and mechanical investigation, according to 9News.
Parents face charges
According to 9News, the 23-year-old woman from Labrador has been charged with several offences, including one count of manslaughter, a domestic violence offence against a child, trafficking in dangerous drugs, and driving without a licence.
On the other hand, Paterson has been charged with one count of manslaughter, a domestic violence offence against a child and trafficking in dangerous drugs. Both were due to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday (February 27, 2026).
