Port Adelaide sulphur fire triggers evacuation as toxic smoke spreads, residents told to leave immediately

A major industrial fire involving sulphur storage has triggered an emergency evacuation in Port Adelaide, with authorities warning that toxic smoke drifting across parts of Adelaide poses a serious health risk. Emergency services issued an immediate evacuation order for people within a 1-kilometre radius of Moonta Road, urging residents, workers and visitors to leave the area without delay.

Others outside the evacuation zone but affected by the smoke were advised to remain indoors, shut all doors and windows, and switch off air-conditioning systems that draw in outside air.

The blaze broke out at an industrial site on Thursday, sending a large plume of smoke south and south-east toward Adelaide's metropolitan area. South Australia Police asked the public to avoid the area, while Ocean Steamers Road was closed in both directions to allow emergency crews to respond safely.


The Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) deployed around 15 firefighting crews, supported by aerial appliances and hazardous materials specialists, to contain the fire. Officials said the incident involved a large industrial shed storing sulphur, making the smoke particularly hazardous.

Authorities confirmed that one worker was rescued from the site and received medical treatment. No other injuries or fatalities had been reported at the time of the latest update.

Burning sulphur produces sulphur dioxide, a toxic gas that can irritate the eyes and respiratory system and may cause breathing difficulties, particularly for people with asthma, children, older adults and those with underlying lung conditions. Emergency officials urged anyone exposed to the smoke to minimise outdoor activity and follow official safety advice.

Emergency responders continued to monitor the movement of the smoke plume while working to bring the fire under control. Residents who had evacuated were told not to return until authorities declared the area safe.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and an investigation is expected once the scene is secured. Authorities have urged the public to stay updated through official emergency alerts as firefighting operations continue.
