The NSW Police Force confirmed the operation in a brief statement posted on X, saying there was no ongoing threat to public safety. “A police operation is underway on George Street, Liverpool. There is no ongoing risk to the community. Further information will be available later today,” NSW Police said.
According to Liverpool NSW news reports, including News.com.au, the operation took place next to a primary school, prompting nearby businesses, including a medical centre, to be placed on lockdown as a precaution.
The outlet reported that a police LandCruiser was used to ram a white Hyundai, which was carrying several occupants. Tactical officers armed with long-arm weapons were seen exiting police vehicles and detaining the individuals on the footpath.
Photos and videos of the detentions circulated online shortly after the incident, though police have not released the identities of those arrested or confirmed the exact number of people taken into custody.
The Liverpool Sydney operation comes four days after recent violent incidents elsewhere in the city. On Sunday, December 14, Bondi was the site of one of the deadliest terror attacks in modern Australian history, prompting increased vigilance by law enforcement across metropolitan Sydney. However, police have not clarified if these two incidents are linked.
