Shortly after, the Holden collided with a Hyundai sedan further along the road. The impact was severe. A female passenger in the Hyundai, believed to be in her 50s, died at the scene. Authorities have yet to identify her formally.
The Hyundai’s driver, a 28-year-old woman, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to John Hunter Hospital.
Police say the driver of the Holden fled the scene before emergency services arrived. Two passengers in the back seat of the Holden, teenage girls aged 15 and 17, were also injured and taken to the hospital under police guard.
NSW Police have established a crime scene and launched a critical incident investigation, which is standard procedure when serious incidents occur during or following police observations. Detectives from the Hunter Valley Police District are handling the case.
To ensure transparency, the investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC), an independent body that monitors police conduct.
Authorities are still searching for Holden’s driver and have urged witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
