Emergency services were called to the Dreamstate music festival late Saturday night after multiple attendees suffered medical episodes. According to police, a man in his 40s died after attending the event, while six other patrons were transported to hospital.
NSW Health confirmed that one person remains in a critical condition, two patients required urgent transfers and three others were taken to hospital for non-urgent treatment.
The deceased has not yet been formally identified.
Police established a crime scene and have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
Safety measures and absence of pill testing
Authorities said the event had legally required safety measures in place, including health promotion workers, free chilled water and misting fans, chill-out spaces and on-site medical services. However, NSW Minister for Music and the Night-Time Economy John Graham confirmed that no pill-testing facility was available at the festival. He noted that existing pill-testing trials had allowed health authorities to share safety information at other events and stressed the need to “get the word out about the dangers”, reported ABC.
The state government is now expected to review the incident alongside the police investigation.
High-dose MDMA warning before festival season
The tragedy comes days after NSW Health issued a public warning about high-dose MDMA tablets circulating in the community. Some pills were also found to contain dipentylone, a synthetic stimulant.NSW Poisons Information Centre medical director Darren Roberts said authorities were concerned about the ongoing detection of these pills and urged festival-goers to remain vigilant.
Health officials emphasised that the amount of MDMA in tablets can vary significantly, even within the same batch, a factor that increases overdose and medical emergency risks.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the death and hospitalisations. The government has indicated it will also examine the incident as part of broader festival safety discussions.
