According to media reports, police were called to the rooftop car park of Westfield shopping centre on North Parade, Mount Druitt, at about 3:15 PM on Saturday after reports that a fight broke out between two groups of people.
Police have said officers were confronted and threatened by the man allegedly holding the machete (a large knife) before police then fired multiple shots at the man. The officials provided the man, who was in his 20s, with first aid before NSW Ambulance paramedics then attended to him, Sky News Australia reported.
The man died at the scene, and police declared a critical incident shortly after 4 PM. A crime scene has been established, and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident has been launched.
The investigation into the matter will be led by a critical incident team from the NSW State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. The emergency services vehicles that were at the scene have reportedly barricaded an entrance of the shopping centre.
A man, who was at the shopping centre when the incident unfolded, told The Saturday Telegraph that he heard officers "rush in and run upstairs" while he was getting a haircut. “It’s terrifying, mate… For things to occur at daylight at 3 PM on a busy weekend, it’s terrifying for everyone,” Raffat Rabbah said.
