He faces six counts of rape, along with charges of stalking, assault with intent to commit rape, assault occasioning bodily harm and deprivation of liberty. The allegations have not been tested in court.
Hauraki allegedly approached woman on morning walk
Police allege Hauraki approached a woman in her 20s from behind at about 6.30am on Thursday, August 20, while she was walking along Brookfield Road near the Brookfield Road bridge. According to police, the woman was stopped, approached from behind and dragged into nearby bushes before the alleged attacker fled the area on foot.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said investigators believed the attack was random and that the accused had been travelling to work at the time.
The woman subsequently reported the incident to police and received medical and psychological care. Police said she was later at home with her family.
Police say Hauraki returned after work
A significant development in the investigation came later that day, when police alleged Hauraki returned to the vicinity of the crime scene after completing his work. Massingham said detectives had launched an urgent investigation following the woman's report and appealed to members of the public for information.
Two people subsequently provided police with dashcam recordings, which investigators described as crucial to identifying a vehicle believed to be associated with the alleged offender.
Police then tracked down the vehicle and intercepted Hauraki, according to Massingham. He was arrested on Thursday afternoon, several hours after the alleged assault.
Six rape charges laid against Hauraki
News.com.au reported that Hauraki was identified in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday. The court was also told there were no acute mental-health concerns involving him and that he was not applying for bail. His matters were adjourned until September 18.
Police say woman’s report helped investigation
Massingham publicly acknowledged the woman’s decision to report the alleged assault, saying her cooperation had assisted officers in responding quickly. Police said she had suffered injuries during the alleged incident and was receiving ongoing care.
Queensland Police have deployed specialist patrols around Brookfield following the alleged attack, with officers expected to remain visible in the area in the coming days.
Police said there was no ongoing threat to public safety and that the incident was being treated as an isolated matter.
Detectives have continued examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, while police and State Emergency Service personnel have remained involved at the crime scene.
