On a surface widely described as a bowling paradise, where the ball swung sharply throughout the match, and even Australia’s Steve Smith admitted no batter could ever truly settle, Bethell stood tall. Australia’s stand-in captain, Steven Smith, said at the presentation that the MCG surface heavily favoured the bowlers, making it a challenging Test for batters throughout.
