Adelaide holds a special place in cricketing history when it comes to India's batting maestro Virat Kohli and for Aussie pacer Xavier Bartlett’s journey from a young fan to a rising cricketing talent. In 2012, a young Bartlett watched in awe as Kohli scored his first Test century at the iconic Adelaide Oval, marking the start of a legendary career.

Two years later, in 2014, the then 15-year-old Bartlett, who was born on December 17, 1998, witnessed Kohli’s brilliance firsthand again, this time enjoying twin tons that left spectators in admiration. By 2015, Kohli’s dominance continued as he smashed another ODI century, this time against Pakistan in World Cup at the same venue, and in 2016, he showcased his versatility with a 90 in a T20 masterclass*, further cementing his reputation as one of cricket’s greats.

Cut to 2025, with the roles being reversed. Bartlett, now an established fast bowler, returned to Adelaide - not as a spectator, but as a player - during Kohli’s farewell tour. In a dramatic twist of fate, Bartlett delivered a fiery over that sent both Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli back to the pavilion in the second ODI, marking a rare and unforgettable moment in Kohli’s illustrious one-day career.

Star Indian batter endured back-to-back ducks in one-day internationals (ODIs) for the first time in his illustrious career. His successive dismissals have triggered concerns over his rhythm and technique, particularly after he stepped away from T20Is and Test cricket.

With ODIs now the only format he continues to play, questions linger about whether Kohli remains central to India’s future plans, especially with the next 50-over World Cup still two years away. The 36-year-old gave a brief wave to the crowd as he walked off, in what is expected to be his penultimate innings on his Australian farewell tour.

From witnessing the rise of the 'King' to playing a part in his farewell at the same ground, Bartlett’s journey has come to a full circle that cricket often brings.
