NSW issues mosquito warning ahead of Easter amid virus activity
Health authorities in New South Wales are urging residents to exercise caution over the Easter long weekend after recent mosquito surveillance detected Ross River virus activity in parts of Greater Western Sydney, raising concerns about increased exposure risks as travel and outdoor activity rise.

Mosquito trapping conducted across parts of Greater Western Sydney has revealed the presence of Ross River virus activity, according to recent monitoring.

According to the 9News website, the finding follows earlier detections of Japanese encephalitis virus and Barmah Forest virus activity in inland regions of NSW earlier this year.

Despite the end of summer, mosquitoes are expected to remain active due to ongoing warm and wet weather conditions, according to NSW Health Executive Director of Health Protection Dr Kerryn Coleman.

"The Easter long weekend and the school holidays are a time when many people travel, spend time outdoors, and take part in activities like camping and visiting parks, which can increase the risk of exposure to mosquitoes and mosquito bites," Coleman said.

"The Ross River virus activity recently detected in greater Sydney is particularly concerning because of the density of the population, so with many people planning to be outdoors, we are encouraging them to take the necessary precautions not to get bitten."

NSW Health is also promoting preventive measures, including vaccination. The Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine is available free of charge for individuals who live or routinely work in designated inland regions, as well as for people employed in certain high-risk occupations.

Health officials continue to monitor mosquito activity and are urging the public to remain vigilant, particularly during outdoor activities over the holiday period.
