Everything we know about Thologolong container compound where Dezi Freeman’s manhunt ended

The seven-month search for fugitive Dezi Freeman ended at a little-known rural property near Thologolong, a bushland site defined by improvised structures made from shipping containers and natural concealment.

According to Victoria Police, officers had the location under watch for more than 24 hours before moving in at about 5.30 am. Negotiations began soon after contact was made and continued for roughly three hours. Freeman was shot dead at about 8.30 am following the standoff.

Images from 7News showed several shipping containers grouped together in a cleared patch of land. One blue container became the focal point of the police operation, with multiple vehicles surrounding it.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush described the structure Freeman occupied as resembling “a cross between a shipping container and a very long caravan,” suggesting it had been modified for habitation.

Thologolong lies in Victoria’s northeast, where properties are typically large, bordered by scrub and trees, and reached via dirt tracks.

Police presence at the site for a full day before the confrontation indicates the landscape allowed officers to observe without being easily detected.

Why the layout mattered

Shipping containers offer strong concealment: steel walls, few openings, and the ability to be arranged into tight clusters that create blind spots. Positioned in an open clearing but ringed by dense bush, the compound would have given its occupant clear sightlines to approaching tracks while remaining hidden from afar.

Several vehicles were visible near the containers, though police have not confirmed whether Freeman had access to them.

Property ownership and inquiry

Authorities said Freeman appeared to be alone at the property and that they are yet to speak with the owner, though the person has been identified. How long the container setup had been there, and whether it was knowingly used as a hideout, remains under investigation.

Freeman had been sought since the August 26 shootings at Porepunkah. The Thologolong site, isolated, low-visibility, and adapted for living, helps explain how he avoided detection for so long.

The property’s layout will now be closely examined as part of the mandatory independent review into the fatal shooting.
