Bomb cyclone lashes NSW coast with 125kmh winds as dozens of homes evacuated amid flooding, coastal erosion, and transport chaos

A powerful bomb cyclone tearing through Australia’s east coast has forced urgent evacuations on the New South Wales Central Coast, with dozens of homes now at risk from destructive waves, flash flooding, and severe coastal erosion.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) issued emergency evacuation orders on Tuesday afternoon(June 30) for five properties along Ocean View Drive at Wamberal Beach and several homes on Hutton Road in The Entrance North. “You must evacuate now because it may become too dangerous to stay in this area,” the SES warned in a statement just before 4 pm.

The massive weather system, classified as a bomb cyclone due to its rapid intensification, is driving torrential rain and wind gusts over 120 km/h, creating hazardous surf conditions along the entire coast.

Sandbags were deployed along Wamberal Beach overnight in a last-ditch attempt to protect properties, but by morning, sections of the dune had already collapsed.

State-level emergency declaration

The Central Coast Council has called for state-level emergency declarations, warning that erosion damage is reaching critical levels. Similar conditions triggered dangerous landslides in the same areas in April.

Sydney has also been impacted, with ferry services cancelled and rail lines affected. Trains to and from Wyong were suspended on Tuesday due to flooding and debris on the tracks. Authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib said conditions are likely to worsen overnight and into Wednesday. “The East Coast isn't out of the woods yet,” he said, urging residents to remain on alert.

The storm is affecting regions from Coffs Harbour in the north to Bega in the south, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of continued heavy rain, damaging winds, and high surf through the next 24 hours.

Coastal communities are bracing for more destruction as the cyclone continues to hammer the shoreline.
