A dog does not need to understand a conversation to notice that something has changed. A smile, a tense expression or a frightened face can alter the way a dog watches, approaches or keeps its distance from a person. For years, researchers have gathered evidence that dogs are unusually attentive to human emotional signals. But a new study has taken the question somewhere deeper, inside the canine brain.

Published in iScience in August 2026, the study used functional MRI scans to examine how awake dogs' brains responded to different human facial expressions. The findings suggest that dogs do not simply divide human faces into “good” and “bad.” Their brains showed different patterns when they encountered happiness, fear, anger and sadness, including distinctions between some negative emotions.

What happens inside a dog's brain?



The research, led by Laura V. Cuaya and colleagues, involved trained family dogs that could remain awake and still during MRI scans. The researchers conducted two related experiments.

In the first, eight dogs were shown photographs of unfamiliar people with either happy or neutral expressions. Happy faces produced stronger activity in a region of the right temporal cortex extending toward the caudate nucleus. These areas are involved in higher-level processing and reward-related responses. The result suggests that a smiling human face carries particular significance for dogs, rather than being processed simply as another visual image.

The researchers then broadened the experiment. Twelve dogs viewed human faces displaying four emotions: happiness, anger, fear and sadness. Instead of relying only on whether a particular brain region became more or less active, the team used machine-learning classification and whole-brain analyses to examine patterns in the dogs' neural activity.

That produced the study's most intriguing result.

The dogs' brain activity contained distinguishable patterns for fear compared with anger and fear compared with sadness. They were not, however, able to clearly separate anger from sadness in the same analysis. In other words, the findings suggest that dogs can make some distinctions among negative human facial expressions, but their ability is not unlimited.

That matters because earlier research had left an important question unresolved: when dogs react differently to happy and unhappy people, are they actually recognizing different emotions, or simply detecting that one expression is positive while another signals something potentially unpleasant?

The new brain-imaging evidence moves the answer toward the former.

The discovery builds on an older line of research


The idea that dogs pay attention to human emotion is not new.

A 2016 study published in Biology Letters tested whether dogs could combine visual and auditory information to identify emotional states in both humans and other dogs. The researchers presented dogs with photographs alongside vocalizations that conveyed positive or negative emotions. The animals were able to match the emotional information across the two senses, providing evidence that they could integrate separate cues rather than merely responding to a single learned signal.

That work was important because recognizing an emotional state from different kinds of information requires more than simply memorizing that a particular face or sound predicts food, play or punishment. The researchers concluded that dogs could discriminate between positive and negative emotional states expressed by both species.

A smile may mean something special to dogs


One of the clearest findings in the new research concerns happiness. Happy faces produced activity in the temporal cortex and caudate nucleus that was different from the responses produced by the negative expressions. The caudate nucleus is associated with reward processing, making its involvement particularly interesting.

Previous canine neuroscience research has linked activity in this region with situations involving rewards such as food or praise, according to Cuaya.

There is also a plausible evolutionary explanation.

Dogs have lived alongside humans for thousands of years, and animals that became particularly good at interpreting human behaviour could have had an advantage in this shared environment. A human smile may be especially informative because positive facial expressions are common components of human social interaction. Psychologist Bridget Waller, who was not involved in the study, suggested to The Guardian that domestication may have shaped dogs' sensitivity to such cues.

But the study does not establish that dogs experience or conceptualize emotions in exactly the same way humans do.

Dogs may need more than a face to understand us


Real-life communication is considerably richer than the photographs used in an MRI experiment.

When a person is frightened, angry or sad, a dog can potentially receive information from posture, movement, voice, facial expression and even scent. The new study deliberately isolated facial information, making it possible to examine the brain's response to expressions without those other signals muddying the result.

That isolation is also one of the study's limitations.

The sample was small, and the participating animals were family pets. Most were border collies, a breed known for its responsiveness to human social cues. The researchers therefore caution against assuming that every dog, or dogs living in very different environments, would respond in exactly the same way.

Still, the significance of the findings lies less in proving that dogs “understand humans” than in revealing how finely tuned their brains may be to us.
