Novak Djokovic playfully teased Carlos Alcaraz about taking a percentage of his winnings following the young Spaniard’s comparison of his new-look serve with the Serbian legend’s. Alcaraz, the world number one, had struggled with consistency and precision in his serve, prompting adjustments for the season-opening Grand Slam. Observant fans noticed his new, more compact technique closely mirrors Djokovic’s, a resemblance the Serbian legend acknowledged after advancing comfortably to the second round at Melbourne Park.

"As soon as I saw it, I sent him a message. I said, 'we have to speak about the copyrights'," the 24-time major winner joked, as quoted by AFP, in the post-match presser.

"Then when I saw him here, I told him we have to talk about a percentage of his winnings.

"Every ace I expect, you know, a tribute to me. Every ace that he makes here. Let's see if he's going to stick to the agreement."

Asked about his new serve ahead of the tournament, Alcaraz said he was flattered by the comparison to Djokovic but stressed that any similarity was purely coincidental.

"No. I didn't think about, or I wasn't thinking about making the same serve as Djokovic," he told reporters. "But at the end, I can even see the similarities."

Djokovic launched his bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title with a commanding straight-set win at the Australian Open. The Serbian star brushed aside Spain’s Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in just two hours. The victory marked a significant milestone, as it was Djokovic’s 100th win at the Australian Open. He will face Italian qualifier Francesco Maestrelli in the second round as his Melbourne campaign gathers momentum.

Djokovic, who has been stuck on 24 major titles since winning the US Open in 2023, dished out a commanding performance in the first round as Serbian fans loudly cheered him on. Now ranked fourth, Djokovic had withdrawn from a warm-up event earlier this month, citing fitness concerns, with his last competitive match coming in early November as he carefully managed his workload.
