Coby Black quits Brisbane Broncos in a shocking move; Young gun set to chase his NRL dream with Canberra Raiders in 2027
Teenage halfback Coby Black will leave the Brisbane Broncos at the end of next season to join the Canberra Raiders from 2027. The 19-year-old, considered Adam Reynolds' successor, has become a free agent and will pursue new opportunities. The Bron...

The Broncos confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon, expressing disappointment over the talented youngster’s decision but acknowledging and supporting his choice to seek new opportunities in pursuit of his professional ambitions.
“Coby has come through our Academy program from the age of 14 and has worked really hard to progress through to our NRL top squad,” Broncos' General Manager of Recruitment and Pathways, Simon Scanlan said in a statement.
“While we're sad to see him leave, we thank him for his dedication and commitment and sincerely wish him every success as he takes the next step in his career.”
"It will be great for Coby to play another year at the Broncos and also guide Souths Logan in QCup," Raiders CEO Don Furner said. "By then he will be 20 going on 21, so that’s a perfect age to welcome him to the Raiders.”
Black’s decision comes at a time when Raiders aim to bolster their halves depth following Jamal Fogarty’s move to Manly. The club recently secured Jonah Pezet from Melbourne for the 2027 season - a signing that reportedly influenced Black’s choice to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Turning 20 in March, Black had been viewed as Brisbane’s long-term No. 7, but the arrival of Pezet and Cowboys prospect Tom Duffy has intensified competition for the key playmaking role.
Eager to further his development under coach Stuart, Black is set to remain with the Broncos through 2026 before officially joining the Raiders in 2027.
