Christmas storms in Queensland
Heavy rainfall, which could trigger flash flooding, is expected in these areas, while the Darling Downs and Granite Belt may also experience large hailstones.
“A very moist atmosphere is in place over most of the state extending from a low pressure system and developing monsoon in place over the Northern Territory," the warning reads.
"Slow moving severe thunderstorms have developed in this moist and unstable environment over the southeast this afternoon, which may persist throughout the afternoon and into the evening."
According to 9News website, storms are expected to continue through the weekend, with heavy rainfall across northern and central Queensland that could cause post-Christmas flooding in some areas. Many roads may face flooding, and a flood watch has been issued for parts of north-west Queensland as catchments remain saturated from recent rain.
"Riverine flooding is possible from Wednesday with road closures and community isolation likely," the warning read.
The Bureau of Meteorology said flooding in south-west Queensland is not expected immediately but could occur in the coming weeks as excess water flows downstream. Residents are advised to monitor the latest warnings and alerts on the BoM website.
