Canberra man on parole charged with rape and assault after allegedly abusing partner over several months; police say harassment began in December 2024, arrest made following victim’s report
The woman reported the alleged abuse to police on Thursday, June 19. Officers executed a search warrant at the man’s home and arrested him. He was taken into custody at the ACT Watch House.
Police said the man had been released on parole in April 2025, just two months before his arrest.
He has been charged with:
- Aggravated assault
- Choking, suffocating, and strangling another person
- Sexual intercourse without consent
- Using a carriage service to menace and harass
Police have not released further details about the alleged assaults or whether any other individuals were involved. The investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are urging anyone experiencing domestic or family violence to contact police or support services. The Domestic Violence Crisis Service in Canberra can be reached at (02) 6280 0900.
In Australia, domestic violence remains a significant issue. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, one in six women has experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or former partner. Advocates say timely reporting and access to support services are crucial for victim safety.
This case may lead to renewed scrutiny of parole monitoring procedures in the ACT, especially in situations involving prior violent behaviour.
