Canberra man arrested after pipe bombs found near Lake Ginninderra
Authorities have arrested a 41-year-old man after multiple pipe bombs were discovered earlier this week near Lake Ginninderra in Belconnen. The devices, found scattered between Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive, sparked an urgent investigation by ACT Policing. Police allege the man both purchased and stole materials used to assemble the explosives and say additional bomb-making items were later seized during a search of his Belconnen residence.

Pipe bombs are improvised explosive devices (IEDs) typically made by filling a sealed metal pipe with explosive material and sometimes shrapnel. When detonated, the pipe can burst violently, causing severe damage or injury. They are illegal in most countries due to their destructive potential and are considered highly dangerous. Law enforcement treats their discovery as a serious criminal matter.

This comes amid heightened security alerts following the recent terrorist attack at Bondi Beach, which has kept authorities across Australia on high alert.

On Saturday, 17 January 2026, ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations team searched the man’s Belconnen residence and found multiple items used to assemble pipe bombs. He was not home during the search.

Police were notified at approximately 10:30 pm that the suspect was located at a unit in Gungahlin. Police arrived at the unit and took the man into custody.

He faces charges of unauthorized manufacture of a prohibited dangerous substance, possession of a prohibited weapon, and theft.

The man is set to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, 19 January 2026. Police say the investigation is continuing and further charges may be filed, emphasizing that the incident is not considered terrorism-related.
