Bondi shooting’s new heroes: Newly released dashcam footage has surfaced showing the harrowing moments before the deadly Bondi Beach shooting, capturing an elderly couple’s desperate attempt to stop the gunman before the rampage started. The video, filmed from a fast-moving vehicle on Campbell Parade, shows the couple confronting alleged shooter Sajid Akram as he emerged from his car armed with a rifle. An Islamic State (IS) flag can be seen draped across the car’s front windscreen as the pair rush toward him, pushing him onto the road and briefly forcing the weapon from his hands.

The footage further shows the elderly man in a pink t-shirt picking up the rifle again as Akram stumbles back toward the pavement. The couple continues to confront him near the vehicle. Drone footage recorded after the incident later shows the two lying dead together on the road, noted The Sydney Morning Herald.

They have not yet been publicly identified. The video’s commentary claims the couple was fatally shot moments after intervening.

Ahmed al Ahmed hailed as Bondi shooting’s hero

Earlier, Ahmed al Ahmed emerged as the most widely shared symbol of bravery from the Bondi shooting, earning praise for wrestling a gun away from the shooter during the deadly Hanukkah attack in Sydney that killed at least 15 people and injured dozens more.

Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old father of two, was shot twice while disarming the attacker and remains in critical but stable condition at St George Hospital. His intervention is believed to have prevented further loss of life. Since the attack, he has gained international attention, with a GoFundMe campaign raising more than $2 million.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly praised Al Ahmed, calling his actions an example of “Australians coming together,” while tributes have also come from the New South Wales premier and the US president, Donald Trump.
