Australia is set for a sweeping overhaul of its top military leadership, with Mark Hammond, the Navy chief, appointed as the next Chief of Defence Force. This comes amid the retirement announcements of current Chief of Defence Admiral David Johnston and Chief of Army Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, marking a significant transition at the highest levels of command.

According to the 9News website, in a historic move, Susan Coyle will assume the role of Chief of Army, becoming the first woman to lead the service, while Matthew Buckley is set to take over as Chief of Navy, succeeding Mark Hammond.

Mark Hammond, in remarks following his appointment, said he is ready to step into the role and lead the force through what he described as “the challenging times ahead.”

His statement reflects rising global instability, from trade tensions and tariff pressures to growing geopolitical risks including war in Iran and the Middle East region, leading to disruption to markets and supply chains.

He said it signals the Australian Defence Force’s move toward a more amphibious focus.

Australia’s planned acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines under AUKUS will be central to his role, with the government aiming to bolster national security and economic growth.
