Australian travellers are being put on high alert as two powerful cyclones close in on the region, with one system intensifying off the coast of Fiji. Authorities are warning that the developing storm cell could trigger widespread disruptions, potentially impacting transport networks and other essential services.

With conditions expected to deteriorate, officials are urging travellers to remain cautious and stay updated, as the twin cyclone threat raises concerns over delays, cancellations, and broader service interruptions across affected areas.

Vaianu, a severe tropical cyclone, is currently at category 3 and is threatening to pass by the western part of the country, close to tourist centre Nadi, as reported by 9News. As the fear of a severe tropical cyclone looms large, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has urged travellers to be on high alert, warning parts of Fiji could be smashed by strong winds, heavy rain and flash flooding.

The storm cell could disrupt transport and other essential services, the updated travel advice stated. "Know your accommodation's evacuation plan. If a cyclone is approaching your area, find your nearest shelter and follow the advice of local authorities," the advice on Smart Traveller said, as quoted by 9News. It urged travellers to contact their airline or travel provider if they are worried about plans being disrupted by the cyclone.

Vanuatu is also under threat as the cyclone moves through the island nation, passing east of another popular tourist destination for Australians. While it is not expected to make landfall in either location, forecasters warn the system could track towards New Zealand by the weekend, placing Auckland, the country’s largest city, firmly in the firing line.

In Fiji, cyclone season lasts from November until April, and the island nation has been hit hard in recent years. Another tropical cyclone, Cyclone Maila, is currently tracking off the Solomon Islands and could hit Papua New Guinea. According to experts, the category 3 storm could still hit Australia, 9News reported.
