Victoria Police have arrested a 37-year-old man from Huntingdale in connection with alleged racial abuse directed at a National Basketball League (NBL) player via social media, marking a first-of-its-kind case for Australian basketball.

Basketball Australia confirmed that the man was arrested and charged on July 2 after sending a racist message to a player's social media account. While the player’s identity has not been disclosed, the Adelaide 36ers stated that one of their athletes was the target and is aware of the arrest.

The incident reportedly occurred following a game at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena on November 17. Basketball Australia’s integrity unit referred the matter to police, who then launched a formal investigation.

"There are laws in place to protect athletes, and the public must be aware of them," a spokesperson for the integrity unit emphasized, commending the player's courage in reporting the abuse.

"The NBL stands united with Basketball Australia in taking a firm stance against any form of online abuse or vilification," Lauren Blecher, NBL Chief Corporate and Governance Officer, said in a statement.

"The action by Victoria Police sends a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. We are incredibly proud of the collaborative efforts that led to this outcome."

The accused has been released on bail and is scheduled to appear at Melbourne’s Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on August 15.

This landmark moment underscores the steadfast commitment of basketball’s governing body to safeguarding athletes and promoting a safe, respectful environment for all participants in the sport.
