Australian cyclist Michael Matthews will not compete in this year’s Tour de France after being diagnosed with a Pulmonary Embolism at a high-altitude training camp. According to his Australian team, Jayco AlUla, the discovery ruled him out indefinitely.

The 34-year-old rider stopped all physical activity immediately following the diagnosis. Team doctors said his condition is stable, but they are conducting a detailed investigation to determine the severity and cause of the embolism. They have devised a careful recovery plan and will re-evaluate his competition readiness.

Matthews had been preparing for what would have marked his ninth Tour de France. He boasts an impressive record in the race, including four stage wins and the green jersey classification in 2017.

His season began strongly with a victory at the Eschborn–Frankfurt Classic in May, grabbing his first significant win.

A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot blocks a lung artery, reducing oxygen flow. The condition can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Jayco AlUla's medical update said he is stable, and the team would pause all competition activity for Matthews to ensure his health and safety.

"The medical team are now thoroughly investigating the extent of the issue and possible cause, to define a safe and optimal recovery process for the athlete," the statement read.

They removed him from the Tour de France roster as a precautionary measure. The team will await the outcome of medical examinations before clearing him to ride again.

Matthews also made his Olympic debut last year, competing in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games road race.

Despite the setback, the team remains optimistic about a full recovery. “His health condition is stable,” according to the team’s statement. The medical staff is working thoroughly to ensure Matthews returns to competition safely.
