Alltours says to counter Air Berlin/Condor merger

Alltours, Germany's fourth-largest leisure group, said on Saturday it was considering setting up its own airline if rival Air Berlin buys German airline Condor from Thomas Cook.

FRANKFURT: Alltours, Germany's fourth-largest leisure group, said on Saturday it was considering setting up its own airline if rival Air Berlin buys German airline Condor from Thomas Cook.

Alltours would not accept higher charges from Air Berlin for seats booked for its own customers if that was to be the outcome of a successful Condor takeover, Alltours Chief Executive Willi Verhuven said in a summary of an interview with Wirtschaftswoche magazine which is due to be published on March 3.

"If Air Berlin planned to tighten the price screw, this will fail," he said. "If necessary, we could establish our own initiative, for which the necessary financial means would be available."

Apart from launching its own airline, Alltours might also use companies such as easyJet or charter airline HAMBURG international as alternatives to a merged Condor/Air Berlin entity, he said.

Verhuven also said he expected the Federal Cartel Office to stop the takeover anyway as it would greatly change the current market for package tours. An extended deadline for the authority's evaluation of the proposed merger runs to April 7, 2008.
