ADB gives China grant to assess quake damage

The Asian Development Bank is to give China a one million dollar grant to assess the damage caused by the deadly earthquake that hit Sichuan province, the lender said Tuesday.

MANILA: The Asian Development Bank is to give China a one million dollar grant to assess the damage caused by the deadly earthquake that hit Sichuan province, the lender said Tuesday.

This assessment will pave the way for further ADB projects to repair the damage and help those affected by the quake that hit the southwestern province on May 12 leaving more than 65,000 dead and another 23,000 missing.

The grant "will fund the acquisition of essential equipment and supplies for basic services, review the disaster management framework for the quake area, and conduct a preliminary damage and needs assessment of the physical and social infrastructure," the Manila-based ADB said in a statement.
