ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi National Oil Company will build a new oil refinery to boost its output capacity by 417,000 barrels per day, Jassem al-Sayegh, head of ADNOC's refining arm Takreer, said on Monday.

The new refinery will be built in Ruwais, where the existing largest refinery in the United Arab Emirates currently produces 400,000 bpd, Sayegh told an oil conference in the UAE capital.

He said the project is still in the planning phase and would be completed in 2013, according to WAM state news agency. He did not disclose the cost of construction.

Abu Dhabi's refining capacity should increase to 885,000 bpd when the new plant enters service, he said, pointing out that 85,000 bpd are currently produced by Um al-Nar refinery.

The emirate of Abu Dhabi accounts for the bulk of the oil production of the seven-member UAE, which has the world's fifth largest proven oil reserves at 97.8 billion barrels.
