OIL SPRINGS: The tiny village of Oil Springs, Ontario, is bubbling with pride this weekend as hundreds gather to celebrate one of North America's first commercial oil wells.

A boisterous parade rolled through dusty streets Saturday trundling toward the historic spot where James Miller Williams dug the oil well some 150 years ago.

The oil well touched off the continent's oil rush in 1858 and ushered in the modern petroleum industry.

Local historians hope the bash will help raise the Oil Heritage District's profile so that one day it might be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
