Parameswaran Iyer, a former bureaucrat, took charge as the new CEO of Niti Aayog on Monday.

Iyer, an Indian Administrative Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, entered the civil services in 1981 and took voluntary retirement in 2009 to join the water and sanitation initiatives at the World Bank. He succeeds Amitabh Kant, who has been appointed the G20 Sherpa after his term ended on June 30.

In 2016, Iyer returned to India and was appointed by the government to head the drinking and sanitation department. There he led the Swachh Bharat Mission of the government between 2016 and 2020. In 2020, he resigned from the position and returned to the US to join the World Bank again.

Before joining the drinking water and sanitation ministry in 2016, Iyer had worked in Vietnam, China, Egypt, Lebanon and Washington for the World Bank. He will enjoy the same perks and work under the same terms and conditions as his predecessor.
