Xi Jinping urges BRICS to stand on ‘right side of history’, calls for peace in Middle East

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday urged BRICS countries to firmly stand on the “right side of history” and play a pioneering role in maintaining peace and stability, as he warned against the continuing war in the Middle East and Gulf region.

Addressing the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Xi said the war in the Middle East had caused serious losses to people across the region and did not serve the common interests of the international community.

He called on BRICS members to play their due role in achieving peace and tranquillity in the Middle East and Gulf region, while urging the grouping to take a pioneering role in maintaining peace and stability.

“BRICS countries should firmly stand on right side of history,” Xi said, according to Chinese state media Xinhua.

Xi said China would work with other BRICS members to play its due role in achieving peace and tranquillity in the Middle East and Gulf region.

“The war in Middle East has caused serious losses to people across the region and does not serve the common interests of the international community,” Chinese state media quoted Xi as saying.

His remarks came as the Middle East and Gulf region remain at the centre of international concern, with the conflict causing significant human and economic losses and putting pressure on the international community to push for an end to hostilities.

Xi's intervention places the BRICS grouping's role in global peace and stability alongside its broader economic and geopolitical agenda as the expanded bloc seeks to increase its influence in international affairs.
