Woman killed, two injured in armed attack along NH-37 in Tamenglong on Kuki community's Black Day

A senior police officer said the attack took place at 4 am along National Highway-37 (NH-37).
The deceased is identified as Nu Lhingzangai while her husband, and her youngest son suffered serious injuries.

The official said that a team of Assam Rifles rushed to the spot evacuated the injured father and son.
The incident took place on a day observed as Black Day by the Kuki community to commemorate lives lost and suffering endured during violent events in the 1990s.
The Kuki Youth Organisation (KYO) Women’s Council condemned the killing and called for an immediate, impartial and thorough investigation.

“The reported incident is particularly painful as it comes on a day observed by the Kuki community as Black Day. A family has been left to bear profound pain and loss,” the council said in a statement stated.
It demanded that those responsible be identified and prosecuted on the basis of credible evidence and due process.
“Women and children must never become targets of violence. Families deserve to live without fear, and victims deserve justice,” the council said.
The Kaimai Naga Village Authority also condemned the attack, describing the perpetrators as an “unidentified group” and expressing concern that the incident could create suspicion and division among communities living in the area.
“This act appears to be a deliberate and malicious attempt to create disharmony, suspicion, and division between the different communities that have long lived together peacefully in this region,” the authority stated.
The village authority appealed to the authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and urged both communities to exercise restraint. It also called on community leaders and civil society organisations to reaffirm peace and understanding.
