Manipur: Militants use drones to deploy grenades, marking dangerous escalation
Guwahati: Triggering a fresh wave of violence, militants launched an attack on Koutruk, Singda, and Kadangband in Manipur on Sunday killing two people, including a woman and injuring several others, including security personnel. Angom Surbala, a resident of Phayeng, was hit by a bullet in the head in Koutruk area and died. Two policemen were also injured. One of the policemen was hit in the leg by a shrapnel from a bomb dropped by a drone.

Police sources said the attack occurred around 2:30 pm when the militants targeted Koutruk Maning Ching. "Surbala and her daughter were caught up in the cross-fire from militants. Manipur Rifles and IRB personnel, who were stationed in the area, immediately retaliated leading to an exchange of gunfire". State and central forces have rushed to the spot.

Police sources said at least two weaponised drones were seen.


The injured, Angom Memicha and Raj Toijam, were rushed to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

Kangpokpi is a Kuki-dominated area, while Imphal West is in the Meitei-dominated valley.
