The higher reaches of Kashmir Valley, including popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg and Sonamarg, experienced light snowfall on Sunday, October 6, marking the second snowfall in the region within ten days. This early snow, combined with rainfall in the plains, has caused a noticeable dip in temperatures, prompting both residents and tourists to prepare for the approaching winter season.

Snow in High-Altitude Areas of Gulmarg, Sonmarg Brings Scenic Views

Areas like the Affarwat range in Gulmarg, Sinthan Top, Razdaan Top, and parts of the Pir Panjal Range were blanketed by snow overnight, much to the delight of visitors witnessing the season’s first snow-covered landscapes. In contrast, lower regions, including Srinagar, saw light rainfall, adding to the cool weather conditions.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, temperatures are expected to drop further in the coming days. Scattered light rain is forecast for the next 48 hours, with the possibility of another round of snowfall in higher elevations.

Weather Experts Expect More Snow

Weather observers predicted that a weak Western disturbance could impact the region starting Tuesday, bringing cloudy skies and potential rain showers to parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Gulmarg recorded temperatures falling to 1.8 degrees Celsius below normal on Saturday night. Snow accumulation in Gulmarg's Phase II reached 2–3 inches, while Razdan Pass in Gurez also experienced light snowfall. Despite this, most of the valley reported temperatures ranging between 2 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal.

Weather Forecast and Preparations for Winter

The weather forecast for the next ten days suggests mostly dry conditions, with occasional short rain spells. Isolated rain showers are expected on October 5, while October 7 and 8 are likely to remain dry. The period from October 9 to 14 is expected to bring dry weather with brief rain spells possible in certain areas.

With winter approaching, residents are advised to prepare for colder days by getting their woollens ready and warming up their homes, as the valley braces for the upcoming season.
